Frequently Asked
Questions

What's in the contest?

The exact projects change every year. We try to monitor industry trends and work with suppliers and sponsors to get the latest technology and update projects accordingly.

If an apprentice qualifies for the international competition, they will be given a list of textbooks to review prior to coming to Ann Arbor.

Will I be paid? Will lodging be provided? Will I receive a per diem or meal stipend?

See Rules and Regulations.

Who creates the projects?

The committee creates the projects with assistance from their journeyman helpers. The committee meets quarterly to make sure all their goals are aligning.

Changes to projects are generally thought of/conceived at the previous year's contest.

How did my apprentice do?

We don't release scores after the contest is complete. Just qualifying to represent your district is an honor, and we don't want anyone to feel like they are less because they didn't score highly. They are still one of the six best apprentices in their craft.

How can I get involved?

See Get Involved.

I am a manufacturer or a sponsor and I want to donate something to the contest.

Please contact the Chairman to offer your services.

Where can I get pictures of the event?

See History of INAC.

Can I watch the awards live?

Yes. They are livestreamed along with the ITP graduation. Your contestants will receive information about how to watch at the beginning of the week.

Can I watch the contest live?

If you're in Ann Arbor, you are welcome to come by the WCC Car Barn to see the contestants in action. We do not currently have an option for remote viewing.

I won but I can't come to the international competition. Can I compete next year?

Yes. But you will need to win your district again. Please note that apprentices can only compete at the district level twice.

I made it to the international competition but didn't win. Can I compete again?

No. You can only compete at the international competition once. After that you are disqualified for the remainder of your apprenticeship.

I competed in one trade last year. Can I compete in another this year?

You can only compete at the international competition once. If you made it to districts in one trade, you may compete in another trade in the future.

How are judges selected?

Industry representatives, many of whom are UA members, are selected by the committee to judge.

How do you avoid bias?

When apprentices arrive, they draw straws and are given a number. They wear arm bands with the number for the remainder of the week and are judged using their number instead of by name or local. If we are aware that a judge and a contestant are from the same local, that judge is asked to remove himself or herself from judging that contestant's projects.

What are the eligibility requirements? How many hours does an apprentice need?

See Rules and Regulations.

Do you ever make exceptions for hours requirements?

See Rules and Regulations.

Can I bring my own tools/materials/etc?

To ensure fairness and parity of opportunity, everything needed to compete will be provided by the contest committee.

I have a question that isn't here.
